Broadhempston Community Land Trust

Broadhempston Community Land Trust completed their six affordable, self-built, ecological houses in 2016. This was a project at Hugo worked on whilst at AK Architects, before he and his wife became self-builders with the project. The houses are constructed with a timber frame and insulated with straw bale walls and super insulated roof.  A polished concrete floor throughout provides good thermal mass to keep the house cool in the summer, but also reflects light beautifully and helps the it feel spacious. The curved, lime plastered window reveals give a soft light to the spaces. The glazed sun space on the front faces south and provides passive heating and ventilation, using solar gain, to naturally heat the houses.
