Planning permission is granted for this new build house in the South Hams. The project is a betterment scheme to replace a poor quality Class Q scheme for a barn conversion. The planning officer supported this proposal’s form and scale, matching that of local barns in the area, maintaining the rural landscape character.
The design replicates an existing traditional barn that has been converted, with a modern extension added at the rear. It employs a mix of traditional, textured materials, such as stonework, brick quoins and slate, with modern, crisp ones; vertical cedar cladding and black standing seam roofing. The use of louvres, both agricultural and modern, allow large glazed areas to be incorporated despite the rural setting, by reducing light pollution but still allowing plenty natural light into the space and views out.
